Fast food turf war sees huge bun fight

A BURGER war has broken out between fast-food giants in Hazel Grove as Ronald McDonald tries to stop the Colonel moving in on his territory.

Chicken fryer KFC has submitted a planning application to Stockport Council to open a 100-seat drive-through outlet on land off London Road.

Nearby residents have voiced protests and found an unlikely ally in McDonalds, which has a restaurant next to the proposed site - and has sent three separate letters of objection voicing its beefs.

And the Big Mac maker has vowed to get tough with their rival claiming its prospective on-foot customers would need to cut across their land and categorically ruled out allowing this.

McDonalds also rubbished traffic research from KFC, branding it inaccurate and unrepresentative, saying the additional cars would be unacceptable.

Hazel Grove Councillor Kevin Hogg said: "With Ronald McDonald in one corner and the Colonel in the other this could be a bun fight to end them all. There’s no love lost between them and it will be a real battle to see who is the burger king of Hazel Grove. McDonalds have raised objections and seem to be hoping KFC will chicken out. The matter will go before a Council committee and we will give all sides a good grilling."

Seven letters of objection have seen residents voice concerns over increased rubbish and traffic, loss of greenery, an existing number of takeaways and the outlet attracting antisocial youths.

A McDonalds spokesman said: "We can confirm we have lodged an objection with the Council on the grounds that access to the new site will cut across our land and impact on our drive-thru."

But KFC has pledged £46,000 for bins to combat litter problems and CCTV to tackle antisocial behaviour, which is already seen as a problem in the area.

A spokesman added: "As one of the most popular quick service restaurants in the UK, we always look for suitable locations to expand our portfolio. Due to popular demand in the area, we can confirm we are pursuing plans to develop a restaurant in Hazel Grove. We look forward to hearing the result of our planning application when it goes to committee in the near future."

The issue will be debated at a Stepping Hill Area Committee meeting on Monday.

Perhaps another war could break out between all those crummy pizza, curry and kebab operations who continually leaflet drop my home with their full colour leaflets advertising their Clostridium inducing wares?
