Winter bites with vengeance

TWO Stockport schools had to close and council workers were out in force to spread nearly 200 tonnes of grit on local roads as temperatures plunged to -4.5C (23F) on Monday night.

Children at two local schools had an unexpected holiday due to the early start of winter conditions.

Offerton High School closed on Tuesday due to lack of gas, but is due to reopen today (Weds).

Marple High School closed early on Monday and remained closed all day Tuesday due to access problems to the school on Hill Top Drive.

It hopes to reopen today depending on the weather.

A council spokeswoman said that, although the Met Office didn't predict snow on Monday, the council's gritting team was soon out in force. It carried out a snow grit on all the borough's main roads, together with prioritised pavement and car park gritting schedules. During the day and night on Monday more than 180 tonnes of grit was used, in an operation involving 120 people.

She said that after a freezing Tuesday night, rain showers are predicted for this morning.

Im from stockport now living in Canada for two years, today was -27(wind chill -34), the schools over here do not close unless temp drops below -40. We have heater blocks on our cars and plug them into the electrical mains over night to stop them from freezing. NOW THATS COLD !!!!....TTFN
