Final farewell to ‘kind and caring’ daughter

30/11/2005

HUNDREDS of people attended the funeral of Bernadette Moloney from Hazel Grove, to pay their last respects.

Family, friends and the wider community have been united in grief following her death after a horrific road crash that also claimed two other lives and injured five others.

People were spilling out of St Bernard's RC Church on Burnage Lane for the 28-year-old's funeral mass held on Friday, November 25.

A horse-drawn carriage and funeral cars filled floral tributes then moved on to Mill Lane Cemetery in Cheadle for an emotional burial.

Bernadette formerly worked at Withington Hospital and had been considering a youth work career.

Her mother, Marie, who runs the Farmer's Arms pub in Burnage, said she was overwhelmed by the amount of people who attended the service for her 'kind and caring' daughter.

She said: "It was a beautiful service and the crowds of people were unbelievable. There were around 700 to 800 people at the service - they could not all fit in the church. The support has been fantastic.

"A friend of mine sang and a cousin, who came over from Ireland, led the hymns.

"Bernie was an only child. She used to see my brothers as also being her's, so they used to call her Our Kid. They left a floral tribute with those words on it.

"All the flowers were beautiful. And the priest said the service held the night before the funeral had the biggest attendance he had ever seen.

"We are now all just trying to cope, she will be sadly missed."

Bernadette, of Bramhall Moor Lane, suffered severe injuries in the accident and was rushed to Manchester Royal Infirmary at 3am on Sunday, November 13. She died two days later.

The tragedy happened at the junction of Crossley Road and Errwood Road in Burnage, near the border with Heaton Chapel, when a Mercedes Benz people-carrier and the Vauxhall Vectra carrying Bernadette collided.

David Forrest, 24, of Burnage, and Laura Finn, 20, of Levenshulme, also both died in the collision. A further five people were seriously injured including two from Stockport.

Marie added: "Bernie was a really kind, caring person. She lived life to the full and had her whole life ahead of her. She was a good listener and anyone with a problem would turn to her for help. She was so thoughtful; everyone loved her."
