50ft mast opponents are on a high

MAST campaigners were celebrating their latest victory after a 50ft mast plan in Romiley was rejected out by members of the Werneth area committee.

The group, Romiley Against Masts (RAM) gathered at Romiley Primary School last week to voice opposition to the siting of a T Mobile mast on BrItish Waterways land at Padden Brook.

The controversial mast, which brought more than 200 letters of protest from schools, residents and members of RAM, was rejected by area committee members on the grounds of visual amenity.

A spokesman for RAM, Emmanual Gaubert, said: "We are delighted that the mast was rejected. We also thank the councillors for showing such wise counsel at the meeting and are grateful for their decision.

"This is the seventh mast rejected in Romiley and we seem to be setting a national example of how to resist these companies. Many people will sleep better in their beds as a result of this decision."

Mr Gaubert said the group planned to lobby British Waterways to enforce a blanket ban on siting masts on its land. He added: "No doubt this will not be the last application in Romiley for a mast but it remains our intention to vehemently oppose future applications, which by their nature cause so much upset and concern to residents."

A newer application for June 2006 see http://www.RAMiley.org.uk for objections to DC023158 off Quarry Rd We are campaigning for higher fees for mast application. We are against bullying by the big companies. Please object now, This is the 10th (tenth!) mast Thanks
