Vicar hopes to be half the man he used to be

LENT might be a time for fasting, but a High Lane vicar is taking it to almighty extremes - he has vowed to lose half his body weight.

Reverend Marc Wolverson, of St Thomas' Church, has embarked upon a sponsored slim after deciding to shed a massive 12 stone, and in the process add some pounds to church funds.

The wake-up call for the 'larger than life' vicar came last November when he was told his blood pressure was 240/80, and he has been diagnosed as morbidly obese.

Rev Wolverson, 37, said: "The whole point of this was I had to do this for medical reasons to bring down my blood pressure. I'm thinking it will probably take the rest of the year. But it's very fortunate that this is beginning in the season of Lent."

The former vicar at St Michael's in Bramhall is having his diet monitored by Hope Hospital's weight management clinic, but in order to achieve such extreme weight loss, he is cutting down to a meagre 426 calories a day, a third of the recommended intake.

Rev Wolverson, who is married and has two young children, explained: "I started really gaining weight after I finished university and I think it became more serious in recent years with the unpredictable hours of my job. I've never been one to indulge in sweets or snacks.

"It's not going to be easy, especially when you come home and the children are having their dinner at home. But one of the things about being a Christian is that not only do we want to be happy and healthy but God wants that too. I'm relying heavily on the prayer and spiritual support of friends."

Alvin West, St Thomas' deputy warden, said: "He's a larger than life character, and works very hard, but unfortunately it's caused him some problems with his health. Hopefully, we will be able to support him all the way through and by Christmas he'll be slimmed down. Everybody's very supportive of him and making sure he doesn't drink too much communion wine."

Vicars preach to the rest of us about self-control, etc., yet a lot of them are downright fat. What self-control have they got when it comes to feeding their faces?
