Mum is biggest support act for Euro star

15/ 3/2006

THOUSANDS of messages of support have flooded in for our Euro Song Contest hopeful Daz Sampson - but none as dear to him as from his mum.

Daz, 31, from Edgeley who has this year's hopes of the nation on his shoulders with his single Teenage Life said: "I've had over one thousand emails from well-wishers from the Merseyway to the Stockport Tourist Office and people come up to me in the street and say 'Go On Daz'."

But Daz said it is his mum Winnie, originally from Ireland and who moved to Edgeley in 1976, who means the most to him.

Proud Winifred said she "laughed and cried at the same time" while she watched her son, the youngest of four boys, on prime time TV.

She said: "As I watched I thought, he's actually going to win. I must have voted 30 or 40 times but I used his phone so it was ok."

She added that when people come up to congratulate her, she tells them "he surprised me too".

Winifred, now retired but who last worked in Woolworths, said: "That lad never ceases to amaze me. I barely see him these days because he works so hard."

Now the first to advise youngsters to do their homework, Daz has admitted he was a bit of an "Arthur Daley" character at school. Winifred admits: "Daz, or Sammo as he is known by his friends, was not fond of his school books, but mad about music.

"He would take my record player and records - some of which I have never seen again - to play with his friends.

"He was a lovable rogue who was confident and cheeky in a way that people liked. He got into a few scrapes like all lads but it was nothing serious."

After being at Avondale High School, Winifred said Daz spent a few years driving a van making deliveries but one day he decided to give it up and become a DJ.

"Since the singles successes of Kung Fu Fighting and Out of Touch he's not looked back," she said.

This week Daz has been auditioning backing singers for Teenage Life and then he plans to concentrate on making the music video.

I tend to agree with Ken..I'm all in favour of local talent, but why the faux American accent with a bit of East end cockney thrown in just to please the bling possie..? the school girl routine IS certainly a worry, if not creepy, still, I guess that's what sells 45's these days.
