High speed police chase ends in smash

A MAN could be left paralysed after a police chase through the streets of Stockport ended in a road crash.

The 23-year-old was in the back of a Vauxhall Astra which smashed into a wall next to the Adswood pub, on Adswood Lane West, Cale Green in the early hours of Sunday morning.

It is understood the car's four occupants were not wearing seat belts, including the 30-year-old driver, who was rushed to Stepping Hill Hospital with a fractured skull.

The high speed pursuit came after the driver allegedly failed to stop for police officers as he drove along Buxton Road, Heaviley shortly after 4am.

An officer has been temporarily suspended from driving duties, in line with procedure, and police have referred the incident to the Independent Police Complaints Commission.

A back seat passenger was trapped in the car for 30 minutes before he could be cut free by fire crews.

He was taken by paramedics to Stepping Hill with a suspected severed spinal cord and later transferred to Hope Hospital for further treatment.

Stockport fire station commander Chris Mycock said: "He could not have been wearing a seat belt to have ended up where he ended up. He had obviously been thrown forward and hit the seats which caused him to twist."

Yesterday (Tuesday) both he and the driver were described as in a serious but stable condition. Neither of the men's injuries are believed to be life threatening.

Police have confirmed that the two remaining passengers, aged 21 and 24 and from Stockport, were arrested on suspicion of theft of a car but were later released without charge. The vehicle has not been reported stolen.

Oh well, they may think twice before trying that again. Are we supposed to feel greived on there behalf. Is it now a case thqat the police are not allowed to pursue. If that was the case we would all evaid capture.
