The Hitman pays a visit

YOUNG patients at Stepping Hill Hospital had a knockout Christmas surprise, when boxing ace Ricky 'the Hitman' Hatton dropped by.

It was the first time the world champion had been to the hospital, on Poplar Grove, since he was born there in 1978.

He took a break from his punishing training schedule to hand out presents at the Treehouse Children's Unit on Monday.

Among the delighted youngsters was Joseph Moss, seven, from Edgeley, who was as pleased as punch with a selection box and signed photograph.

Ricky, 28, said: "As a father myself, I can appreciate how difficult it must be to have children in hospital at Christmas.

"I'm pleased to be back at Stepping Hill for the first time since I was born and hope I can bring a smile to some of the faces here."

The die-hard Manchester City fan, who is still undefeated as a professional, is currently preparing for his next big fight, against Colombian Juan Urango in Las Vegas on January 20.

He will do battle for the IBF and vacant IBO light welterweight titles.

Dr Chris Burke, chief executive of Stockport NHS foundation trust, added: "We are delighted that Ricky has found the time to visit our children's unit at a time when he is in strict training for his next fight."
