Schoolboy killed in hit & run

TWO Stockport communities are in mourning this week, following the tragic road deaths of a young boy, and a dad of five.

Twelve-year-old Craig Muskett was riding his BMX bike on Sandiway, Bredbury, on Friday, when he was in collision with a blue van that did not stop at the scene.

Craig was just yards from his Woodgate Close home when the accident happened at around 7pm.

His dad Ian rushed out and was first to the crash scene, trying desperately to give first aid to the youngster, along with a passer-by.

As his dying son lay in his arms, Ian was heard crying out to Craig to 'wake up', but the terrible injuries proved fatal, and Craig died later in Stepping Hill Hospital that night.

Following Craig's death, his heartbroken parents Ian and Lindsay paid tribute to their son who they described as being 'loved by many.'

"Craig was a very special son. He was loved by many friends, he loved his family, and was caring and happy," they said.

"Craig's life was cut tragically short and a big gap has been left in our lives," they added.

Emotional tributes, flowers, candles, toys and an England football shirt signed by friends have been laid at the scene of the accident, for the Werneth High School pupil.

Cards read: "You will be a light shining bright in heaven" and "Fondest memories of a truly beautiful boy who will be greatly missed".

Neighbours, who have known the family for several years, described the youngster as 'an angel' who enjoyed play wrestling on the green nearby.

They said: "He was a lovely lad. Since this happened, the street has been very quiet. It's hit everyone, it's just tragic."

Now many residents on the surrounding estate have said they will petition for traffic calming measures including speed bumps on Sandiway in the hope the tragedy is not repeated.

Werneth headteacher Pam Campbell added: "It is a terrible shock to the school community to hear of the untimely death of Craig.

"We are devastated to lose a member of our community in such tragic circumstances.

"Craig was a lovely boy who will be remembered with fondness by staff and pupils."

A 35-year-old man handed himself into police on Saturday, and has been arrested and bailed on suspicion of manslaughter.
