Hatters legend dies

27/ 7/2007

STOCKPORT County legend Danny Bergara has died.

The Uruguayan became the first ever foreign manager in English football when he took over at Rochdale in 1988, before moving to Edgeley Park a year later, and some say he paved the way for the likes of Arsene Wenger and Jose Mourinho.

Bergara, who turned 65 last week, is one of the Hatters' most successful managers, taking County to Wembley four times and winning them promotion in 1991, rescuing the club from the doldrums of the old fourth division.

He was entered into the Stockport County hall of fame in 2004.

The former Hatters boss was a scout for Premiership side Sunderland before suffering his first stroke in March.

Despite showing signs of a recovery, he had a second and much more severe stroke just weeks later in Sheffield.

County's media manager Des Hinks said: "Danny put the pride back into County and was, without doubt, the catalyst for the club's revival in the 1990s.

"He's got iconic status among the fans and they, like everyone else connected with Stockport County, will be devastated by the heartbreaking news of his poor health."

Last year Bergara gave an interview to the Observer, in which he said there were now too many foreigners in English football and that he missed being a manager.

Irwin Collins, chairman of Stockport County supporters club, said: "It's all very sad - he is a hero at Edgeley Park.

"He got us going, and in my time is probably our most successful manager."

A County fan as well as County manager, always remember a reporter asking Danny what he thought of the over exuberant County fans invading the pitch after scoring the winning goal at Halifax away "I can understand it I was on the pitch myself". Top man. I'll raise a glass to the man from Uruguay, cheers Danny.
