£36m means Mersey water is cleanest yet

ANGLERS in Stockport have welcomed the £36m upgrade of a new treatment plant which will make the waters of the River Mersey cleaner than they have been in centuries

The multi-million pound upgrade of Stockport waste water treatment works at Heathside Park Road, Cheadle Heath, serves a population of approximately 152,000 people.

A spokesman for United Utilities said until the end of September waste water will be diverted from the neighbouring old works - parts of which date back to the 1920s - to a new, state-of-the-art equipment.

Keith Dyall, match secretary of Cheadle Angling Club, said he was delighted with the latest efforts to ensure the River Mersey was kept clean for users.

He explained: "Some of our members fish a stretch of the Mersey and have caught chub, roach, dace, gudgeon, trout and even barbel, and that's a fish that only likes clean water.

"We would welcome any improvements that will ensure that any cases of pollution that have in the past come from the old plant in the form of raw sewage will be eliminated."

Andrew Kennedy, United Utilities project manager, said: "This work takes waste water from thousands of homes and businesses, treats it and then safely returns it to the River Mersey.

"Once these new works are up-and-running the water being returned to the river will be the cleanest it has ever been, which is great news."

Work on the wastewater treatment works began last year and is expected to finish before the end of year, four months ahead of schedule. The improvements included the building of new final settlement tanks and an aerator building.

There are many smells associated with Stockport town centre: the brewery, the dog dirt, the smell of the mersey and despair. Take away one and you are messing with an eco system that has been in place for centuries. Clearly not all progress is good.
