It’s time for action!

HEATON Norris-based Paramount Amateur Boxing Club return to competitive action next week when Reddish southpaw Tommy Bradford travels to Merseyside to face Salisbury ABC’s Simon Tonks at the Liverpool Dockers Club.

And Paramount head coach Mick Kenyon believes his club are on the verge of stepping out of the shadows of some of their more illustrious neighbours.

"Perhaps in the past we’ve been viewed as something of an unfashionable club, but that attitude has been changing over the past few months," said Kenyon. "Tommy is a great fighter in his own right, but he’s also keen to follow the path set by one of our former members, Danny Harding, who has gone on to compile an unbeaten record in the professional ranks.

"Along with our welterweight Simon Goulden and flyweight Nic Fitzgerald, Tommy has endured eight weeks of intense training for the new season and everyone connected with this club believes we are making an impact on the North West boxing scene.

"We’ll make sure Tommy gets as much experience as possible before he enters the National ABA’s in May and we’ll see how Simon gets on in the National Novice Championships.

"Nic is aiming to make his Paramount debut before the end of the year and with two years training under his belt, I believe he could take the flyweight division by surprise and become a genuine contender in next season’s Junior ABA’s."

  • STOCKPORT’S unbeaten lightweight prospect Harding has targeted the beginning of November for a ring return.

Harding, aged 26, has recently returned to training, at Oliver Harrison’s gym in Salford, after undergoing a minor sinus operation. He is fighting fit again now, and eager to extend his so-far unbeaten six-fight career in the paid ranks. Harding’s last victory came in April when he beat Chris Pacy for the second time at Altrincham Leisure Centre. Since then he has sparred with famous names Amir Khan and Michael Gomez, and has this week been invited to spar with former British featherweight champion Andy Morris.
