Help us find the new Ricky

PARAMOUNT Amateur Boxing Club has challenged the people of Stockport to help them produce their first hometown champion since Ricky Hatton.

Housed in a run down Heaton Norris church close to the busy A6, the seven-year-old club has defied the odds and already produced two ABA finalists and four regional champions.

However, head coach Mick Kenyon has issued a rallying call, not only for volunteers to help with a much-needed summer makeover, but also for additional coaching staff.

"The facilities here aren’t good and the lads deserve better but, apart from 76-year-old Arthur Bridgewood who trains the youngsters, I do everything else myself.

"I just can’t keep on top of things.

"Coaching, arranging fights, sparring, sourcing new equipment and secretarial work, the list is endless," he explained.

"This club has fantastic potential, we’ve achieved a lot, but we need to improve in all areas.

"Stockport has a fantastic boxing pedigree, Ricky Hatton was born here, and although I can’t promise to pay anyone for their time, I’ll say this; help us identify the next ‘Hit-man’, make a difference to the lives of the young kids who come here every week, and be part of our dream.

"People can help in many ways, by coaching or by giving time helping with the maintenance, plumbing, electrical work, building and decorating.

"I’m closing the gym over the summer for a complete renovation - but can’t do it on my own.

"If there are any retired coaches out there who’d like to commit to one or two nights per week I’d love to hear from them too.

"You don’t need to have been a boxer to help.

"We’re at the crossroads and have to move on, but we need some help.

"Without it we face an uncertain future."
