Guard/Little take cricket club honours

6/ 2/2008

THERE was another full house last Wednesday in the round robin pairs event at Stockport Cricket Club.

Russ Guard and Ann Little emerged victorious with 46 points, while three other pairs took second spot with 42 points - Ian Hibbert and Stuart Hunter, Graham Jones and Sylvia Swindells, and Robert Longden and Geoff Richardson.

Sunday’s winter sweep quarter-finals saw Steve Hargreaves beat Graham McDermott 21-12, Ian Stokes beat John Hambleton 21-19, and Andrew Jones go down 21-19 to Mike Bacon.

The last quarter-final game saw Gary Whittaker beat Reg Fletcher 21-12.

In the semi-finals Whittaker went in front of Bacon 15-11, before Bacon responded with a six break to take a 17-15 lead.

Whittaker levelled with two singles, but Bacon took a double to lead 19-17 and only allowed Whittaker one more single before weighing in 21-19.

The other semi saw Hargreaves come from 12-10 behind to beat Stokes 21-15.

The final saw Hargreaves romp into a 19-11 lead, but Bacon dragged his way back to 18-19.

However, Hargreaves bagged the last two singles to give him his first sweep of the winter.

The flyer was won by John Davies when he beat ex-Stockport County player Steve Crowther 21-19 in the final.

This weekend the Frank Andrews Trophy is up for grabs.
