Brilliant Bailey shines

BRUTAL David Bailey smashed a brilliant quickfire century on Sunday as Compstall saw off Old Glossop in the second round of the Bissenden Cup at Manor Park.

Old Glossop skipper Andy King won the toss and elected to bat first. They opened with Steve James and Paul Phillips taking on Compstall’s attack of Rick Shaw and Sam Markovic.

The introduction of skipper Peter Richards rewarded Compstall with three wickets, but Old Glossop continued to score steadily, with the innings closing on 187 with Andy King on 60 not out.

The Compstall reply was all about the innings of David Bailey though.

He was at first watchful, and at the end imperious and brutal as he gave Compstall victory by seven wickets when he raced to his ton with 22 off five balls.

He helped guide Compstall to 191 for 3 and was ably supported by Peter Jackson, Peter Richards and Stuart Bass, who all hit 25 each.

On Saturday there was another derby game for Compstall, this time at home to Hawk Green.

Compstall skipper Richards elected to bat and opened the innings with Bailey and Jimmy Williamson against Green’s attack of Sam Messih and Simon O’Connor.

The first 16 overs produced 18 runs, and it wasn’t until the 17th when Malc Strong had Williamson stumped for five that the crowd woke up.

Next to the crease was Paul Needham, but he was next to leave, run out for two.

The skipper joined Bailey with the score on 23 for 2 and, marginally, improved the run rate before Bailey became Strong’s second victim for 25.

With the score at 55 for 3 with only 16 overs left, Mark Dale was promoted as a pinch hitter as he joined Richards, and the pair took the score to 86 when Richards was bowled Strong for 32.

Dale and Mark Richards, who scored 36 and 23 respectively, both struck the ball sweetly to enable Compstall to finish on 159 for 8.

In reply, Green’s openers struggled against Rick Shaw and Peter Richards and wickets fell on a regular basis as Shaw dismissed Phillips, Henderson and Strong, all to exceptional catches by Andy Jackson.

Richards took the wickets of Littler and Messih to leave Green on 27 for 5, and Shaw then took the wickets of Hallas and Hill.

With Mark Richards having Clements caught at gully, Green were 55 for 8, however, Josh Granite and Simon O’Connor struck out to take the total to 115 before Mark Richards and Stuart Bass dismissed them for 18 and 31 respectively.

This was another excellent win for Compstall with Shaw closing with figures of 14 overs, 5-26.
