Ton up Hayward!

HAZEL Grove’s determined batsmen provided the platform for another welcome victory on Saturday.

Hosting visitors Dove Holes, Grove batted first, with openers Geoff Noden and Nick Hayward making a postive start.

Their opening partnership had reached 109 when Noden was run out for 46 following a fine throw from the boundary edge. Mike Potter nudged around for 23 before being caught behind with the score now at 178 for 2.

Hayward marched on to his century with a huge six, but added only six more before being caught at third man at 182 for 3.

The Grove innings subsequently closed on an impressive 207 for 4.

Despite their lowly league position, Dove got away to a decent start against a Grove attack that lacked penetration. They reached 52 before Noden had Johnson caught behind for 27.

After 20 overs there were 79 on the board, but a double bowling change saw Potter peg back the run chase with seven overs for just four runs.

At the other end Alex Wigley picked up three wickets, including that of Joe Gregory who was caught and bowled for 41 to leave the visitors on 85 for 4.  Potter picked up Jack Gregory for 22 at 97 for 5.

Paul Scowan and Dave Routledge dug in before a flurry of runs - 36 in just four overs - signalled Dove’s intent to go for the win.  However, Potter got an LBW decision against Cartledge [21] with the score now at 141 for 6.

Vernon was run out, before Potter struck again as he bowled Gould at 168 for 8.

Last hope Scowan was run out for 31 at 178 for 9.

Baldwin had no option but to give it a charge, and he was stumped by Ralph Taylor as Potter - with 4-43 - finished the Dove Holes innings on 185.

  • GROVE’S second XI were put in at Buxworth and registered 174 for 8, largely thanks to Luke Bennett’s 67 and Dave Harris’s 48. Buxworth gained a two-wicket victory though, despite 3-30 from Grove bowler Jake Bennett.
