South Africa clinch series

2/ 8/2008

SOUTH Africa won the third Test by five wickets at Edgbaston to clinch the npower series.

Captain Graeme Smith led the way with a fantastic innings of 144 not out and was ably supported by wicketkeeper Mark Boucher.

Smith hit the winning runs as South Africa claimed their first series victory in England since 1965.

Earlier Lancashire duo Andrew Flintoff and James Anderson had the toursits reeling as they were reduced to 93-4.

Just as in the first innings, 30-year-old Flintoff caused the South Africans problems with yorker-length deliveries from the Pavilion End due to his hand releasing the ball from above the line of the sight screen.

McKenzie got himself in a pickle, and was in the process of ducking when struck full on the boot in front of off-stump.

South Africa, set 281 runs to take an unassailable 2-0 lead in the four-match series, then lost Kallis in similar circumstances to leave the tourists fuming on the balcony.

England's players celebrated enthusiastically but Kallis was incensed at the unusual dismissal - he had his off-stump knocked out by a Flintoff yorker in the first innings - and swished at the stumps with his bat in frustration.

In between those two successes, left-arm spinner Monty Panesar was granted another lbw when umpire Aleem Dar adjudged a delivery which fizzed on to Hashim Amla would have gone on to clip the bails.

And Anderson picked up the fourth wicket when Prince edged behind, 15 minutes before the break.

In the first session, Paul Collingwood was last man out for 135 in England's second-innings total of 363.
