Compstall march on

COMPSTALL comprehensively saw off the challenge from Tintwistle at Ernocroft Road on Saturday as the hosts comfortably won by 66 runs.

Compstall’s skipper Peter Richards won the toss and elected to bat on a wicket which was a bit livelier thanks to the early morning rain.

However, the openers, David Bailey and Stewart Jackson, made light work of scoring until the 15th over when Peter Higginbottom was introduced into the attack and accounted for Bailey for 25 with his second ball with the score on 64.

Jackson, who earlier in the week played at Lord’s for the Army and scored 67, was then joined by Mark Richards who lost his wicket to Jimmy Blackwell to leave Compstall on 78 for 2.

The introduction of Martin Harris into the Tintwistle attack caused some concern when at 130, Jackson fell victim to Harris for an excellent 66, leaving Compstall six down.

Fortunately though, the tail wagged in the form of Danny Millen and Matt Shelton and the Compstall innings eventually closed on 195 for 9.

The Tintwistle reply never really got off the ground as they lost their first five wickets for 39 to the opening attack of Rick Shaw and Peter Richards.

A stand of 64 between Martin Harris and Andy Dwyer was then broken when Mark Richards bowled Harris for a well-constructed 49 to leave the visitors on 103 for 6.

Dwyer continued to defend his wicket, but after Richards accounted for Gray, Shaw and Peter Richards were brought back into the attack and quickly mopped up the tail to leave Dwyer on 35 not out and Tintwistle all out for just 129.

Peter Richards and Shaw both finished with four wickets apiece.

Compstall visit Stockport neighbours Romiley this weekend.
