A double celebration

COMPSTALL’S cricketers celebrated late into the night on Saturday as both first and second teams won their respective divisions in the Peak Sports Derbyshire and Cheshire League.

Having already won the Bissenden and Hawke Cups, Compstall also made history as they became the first club to do the double double.

The first team entertained Dinting and, having won the toss, Dinting’s skipper elected to bat with John Coleman and Jimmy Brotherton opening the innings against Compstall’s usual bowling pairing of Peter Richards and Rick Shaw.

Richards struck twice to remove both openers leaving the visitors on 12 for 2.

Matt Blood and Tom George added 20 runs, before Blood was caught behind by Steve Heginbotham off the bowling of Shaw.

Aaron Bleakley and George took the score to 71 when George was run out for 29, followed shortly after by Bleakley for 23.

Sam Elliot and Gaz Gerard, with 16 and 19 respectively, took the score to 111, before both were removed by Shaw.

A quickfire 30 not out from Mike Parker helped Dinting to 152 for 9 from their allotted overs.

The Compstall reply was led by Paul Needham and David Bailey, but unfortunately the latter was first to fall lbw to Andy Logan for only two.

Neil Homer joined Needham and the pair took the score to 46 when Needham was clean bowled by Logan.

Skipper Peter Richards was dismissed by Zak Goddard, but Stewart Bass and Homer, who was batting very well at this time, added 50 runs before Bass was lbw to Brian Thompson.

This was to be Dinting’s last success as Homer and Mark Richards took the score to 156 for 4 as Compstall secured a well-earned victory and a fourth consecutive championship.

Homer closed on an excellent 58 not out and Richards on 16 not out.

Compstall’s second team claimed their title after taking enough points from their away match at Dinting.
