Another big cup week

10/10/2007

WOODLEY Sports face another major week of action in FA knockout competitions this week.

The Steelmen face long trips twice within the next four days starting tonight [Wed] as they travel to Newcastle Blue Star to replay their FA Trophy preliminary round clash after a 1-1 stalemate at Lambeth Grove on Saturday.

Dave Hanlon pounced for a late Woodley equaliser in that game after the Geordies had sneaked into an 84th minute lead.

Saturday is much more of a crunch affair though, as Chris Willcock’s team head off to Cumbria to take on UniBond Premier outfit Kendal Town in the third qualifying round - that’s just two games away from the first round proper.

On tonight’s replay in Newcastle, Sports boss Willcock said: "We’re still in the tie undoubtedly. I saw enough on Saturday to believe that we still have more than enough in us to go and get a result up there.

"I think we’ll be able to create more opportunities as the onus will be on them more now as they’re at home.

"They’ll have to come at us this time, so hopefully we’ll get a few chances to score ourselves.

"Saturday’s FA Cup game is a big one for the club too of course.

"I’ve had Kendal watched, they’re a good, solid outfit.

"It’s up to us to go there and try and exploit their weaknesses though.

"I think it will be ever so close. One split-second bit of genius or a major error at the back could be the difference.

"I think we’re well matched with Kendal, so hopefully we can win that one too and still be in the hat for both competitions come next Monday."

All the Woodley squad are available for the two cup games this week, apart from striker Mario Sergio-Daniel who is suspended.

  • WOODLEY Sports chiefs are on the lookout for a new reserve team management duo following the departure of Neil Rourke.

Ideally applicants should be qualified to UEFA B level and possess some experience of working or playing at a semi-pro club. Enquiries about the positions, which will both see plenty of liaison with first-team bosses Chris Willcock and John Flanagan, should be directed to the club’s office number - 0161 406 6896.
