Chris’s Cup hangover

STUTTERING Woodley Sports slipped to a 1-0 home UniBond League defeat to Rossendale United on Saturday.

It was a disappointing result for the Steelmen, who appeared to be still suffering from the after-effects of back-to-back defeats in the FA Cup and the FA Trophy during the previous 10 days.

Manager Chris Willcock said: "It looked like an uneventful draw was on the cards until they scored in the 77th minute. I think my lads were suffering a bit of a hangover from the FA Cup defeat at Kendal.

"It’s about picking the players up again now though, and getting that confidence and belief back. Some of the lads were feeling a tad sorry for themselves on Saturday.

"We need to get a smile back on faces now, and we’ve got a great chance to do that on Tuesday [last night] when we’re at home to bottom side Radcliffe.

"Hopefully we can get a result during the week, then take that into Saturday’s big derby at [league leaders] Curzon Ashton."

Meanwhile, Willcock has been busy in the transfer market this week.

Striker Lee Henley has joined Woodley from Flixton, while left-back Jamie Kay returns to Lambeth Grove following a spell at Curzon Ashton.

Danny Stubberfield is an attacking midfielder who joined Woodley last week from Atherton Collieries, while winger Michael Warwick joins from Leigh RMI. He is a former Israel under-18 and under-20 international.

Big game for youth team

  • WOODLEY’S promising youth team take on Ashton Town tomorrow night [Thursday, 7.30pm kick-off] in the third round of the prestigious FA Youth Cup competition at Lambeth Grove.

Should the young Steelmen emerge victorious, they will then enter the draw for the next round which features all the professional clubs.

Admission to tomorrow’s game costs just £2 for adults and £1 for children.
