Going back to basics

WOODLEY Sports will have to get back to basics if they are to arrest a worrying run of defeats in UniBond Division One North.

The Steelmen slid to their third straight league reverse on Monday night when they went down 2-0 at Bradford Park Avenue.

That result followed Saturday’s comprehensive 4-1 home defeat at the hands of Newcastle Blue Star.

Woodley’s assistant boss John Flanagan said: "We are having a tough time of it at the moment, but we’ve got to keep working hard, keep our heads, and try and keep the pressure off the lads.

"We’ve got to get back to basics now, and re-instill some of the tactical discipline that has been missing of late."

Woodley haven’t won a league game since the 3-0 derby success against Mossley way back on September 8, a run which has seen the Lambeth Grove slide down to 13th place in the table.

Manager Chris Willcock and Flanagan have been busy in the transfer market though, having brought in midfielders Kyle Buckley and Lee Ricken in from Rochdale and Hyde United respectively.

Lee Hendley has also arrived from Radcliffe Borough, while Flanagan has revealed that discussions are ongoing with two additional player targets.

"We have tweaked the side around and changed it a bit lately, but that seems to have knocked us back a little," added Flanagan.

"We’ve brought a few players in, and they’re going to take time to bed in.

"We’ll be looking for a good performance at home on Saturday though."

Woodley host fellow mid-table outfit Garforth Town on Saturday in a re-arranged league fixture [3pm ko].

  • WOODLEY chiefs are running a ticket promotion for their home match against Garforth on Saturday. A child under the age of 16 can attend the match for free when accompanied by a paying adult.
