Woodley strike back

28/11/2007

WOODLEY Sports roared back from a two-goal half-time deficit to bag a crucial point at Skelmersdale United on Saturday.

It wasn’t looking too promising for the Steelmen at the interval, but second-half strikes from youngster Gary Gee and full-back Nathan Wood - a recent capture from Kendal Town - secured a share of the spoils. Despite the comeback, Woodley boss Chris Willcock felt his side were unlucky not to come away with all three points.

He said: "The scoreline definitely flattered Skem at half-time. I said to the lads at the interval that we were still well in it, and maybe, looking back, we should have gone on to win the game.

"They weren’t hurting us. We had nullified their threat."

Still, Willcock was pleased with an away point, although he now admits that six points are now up for grabs this week. Tuesday night  Woodley travelled to Clitheroe, a side who have won just once all season, then on Saturday Tameside rivals Mossley arrive at Lambeth Grove [3pm ko].

Willcock added: "If we can get those six points we will be right back in the mix as far as the chase for the play-offs is concerned. That’s just how close our league is. Anyone can beat anyone on any given day.

"We know all about Mossley though, having knocked them out of the cup earlier in the season. It’ll be interesting to see how they cope with our pitch, as our ‘home’ game in the cup earlier this season had to be played at Cheadle."

  • WOODLEY hot-shot Mario Sergio-Daniel has left Lambeth Grove and joined Rossendale United after being offered more money to play by the Lancashire club.
