Steelmen strike back

Simon Smedley
23/ 1/2008

DESPITE the miserable conditions last weekend, both Woodley Sports and Cheadle Town managed to fulfil their scheduled fixtures.

There was never any danger of Woodley’s home game against Bamber Bridge being called off of course, due to their artificial Fieldturf playing surface.

Chris Willcock’s side found themselves 2-0 down at half-time, but a stirring fightback saw left-back Neil Wright pull one goal back, before striker Danny Stubberfield levelled matters with a spectacular overhead kick.

The match finished 2-2 and Woodley secured a priceless point which moved them up to the increasing comfort of 12th place in the UniBond division one north table.

The Steelmen will be hoping to extend their recent encouraging run of three games unbeaten when they travel north to Newcastle Blue Star on Saturday.

Woodley’s recent upturn in fortunes has coincided with boss Willcock drafting in no less than five new players over the past couple of weeks.

Kyle Buckley’s move from Rochdale has now been made permanent, while Matt Smith has linked up from Cheltenham Town.

Karl Carney and Ryan Wignall have both been signed from Vauxhall Motors, while Phil Charnock has arrived from Leigh RMI.

Highlights from Saturday’s draw against Bamber Bridge will be featured on Friday’s ‘Greater Manchester Football Show’ on our sister TV station, Channel M.

  • CHEADLE Town played at Park Road on Saturday in the Vodkat League's only second division game to survive the weather.

However, the local outfit lost 3-1 against high-flying Ashton Athletic, with Scott Flanagan scoring a late consolation goal.

This weekend Cheadle are at home again, against first division Runcorn Linnets in a crunch Vodkat League Cup third round clash.

    The match kicks-off at 3pm.
