Texas here I come!

GIRLS’ football ace Lucy Milward can scarcely contain her excitement now that the start of her four-year scholarship at the Tyler Junior College in Texas is just weeks away.

Nineteen-year-old Lucy, from Brookhead Drive in Cheadle, beat off some strong competition in a trial game to land her dream move to America, and now she is relishing her opportunity to make an impact in the heat and humidity of Texas.

Lucy said: "I can’t wait to go now, I’m really excited. I’m not nervous at all.

"I’ll be studying for a sports-based degree over there, but getting the chance to play football for the College team is something I’m particularly looking forward to.

"I’ll be training twice a day, and there will be games once or twice a week, but I think I’ll be okay with the 90 degree heat.

"It’s just going to be different playing in hot conditions like that, but I’m really looking forward to the challenge."

Lucy, who is set to leave her mum and dad and 16-year-old sister Melissa behind, has been playing soccer since the age of 10.

She won leagues, cups, and numerous other honours with Stockport County Ladies - and played at County’s Centre of Excellence - until a move to Saffron Offerton at the age of 16.

The left-midfielder enjoyed three happy years there, before spending last season at Curzon Ashton Ladies.

Lucy has just completed a successful two-year National Diploma course in Sports and Exercise Science at South Trafford College, and it was her tutor there - former Manchester City and Ipswich Town winger Nigel Gleghorn - who recommended her to play in a showcase trial game in January at Hopwood Hall College in nearby Middleton.

An excellent performance in that game led to the call-up from the Tyler College, and now Lucy is due to jet off to the USA on August 1.

As for inspirational figures in her life, Lucy wanted to thank two people in particular as she prepares for her dream scholarship trip.

"My first coaches at Stockport County - Jacci Cooper and Nicola Gaskell - helped and guided me brilliantly early in my football career," said Lucy.

"I’d like to thank them both very much for that. They were fantastic."
