Opening defeat frustrates Pickering

WOODLEY Sports boss Ally Pickering saw his side throw away a lead on Saturday as they went down 2-1 at Wakefield in their opening day UniBond League clash.

Danny Queeley put the Steelmen in front with a crisp finish on 52 minutes, but a controversial penalty 15 minutes later got the Yorkshiremen back on terms. The hosts then bagged a winner with just eight minutes to go.

Pickering said: "I’m gutted. The match was there for us to win, that’s the most frustrating thing.  A scruffy 1-0 win would have done for us, but the referee then gave Wakefield a poor penalty which got them back into the game.  We kept the ball well enough and I was impressed with our back four, but overall we just didn’t get going enough.  At least we’ve now got two home games back-to-back to help try and get Saturday out of our system."

Woodley’s opening home league game of 2008/09 was against Chorley last night [Tues], then on Saturday they host Radcliffe Borough [3pm ko].
Woodley travel to North Wales to take on Colwyn Bay on Bank Holiday Monday afternoon [25th].Jamie Bramley
