Sports face FA Cup replay

WOODLEY Sports’ FA Cup hopes remain alive until Wednesday night following last Saturday’s preliminary round draw against Brodsworth Welfare.

Saturday’s game in Gorton finished goalless, meaning a replay at Brodsworth must take place tonight with a place in the FA Cup first qualifying round up for the grabs for the victors.

Whoever progresses into the first qualifying rounds has the chance to earn £3,000 in prize money should they make the second round.

Woodley remain in 15th place in the UniBond First Division North table, and they get their league campaign back on track again this Saturday with a tough-looking home game against second-placed Newcastle Blue Star.

Meanwhile, Sports’ boss Ally Pickering has signed Cayne Hanley from Blue Square Premier outfit Northwich Victoria.

Early season North West Counties Premier Division title favourites New Mills lost their second game in under a week when they went down 4-1 at Alsager Town on Saturday.

After a goalless first half, Scott Taylor fired Alsager ahead on 47 minutes, and added a second seven minutes later.

Although Vinny Braine reduced the arrears for Tony Hancock’s side on the hour mark, further goals from Matt Woolley on 73 minutes and Tom Swan on the stroke of full-time gave all three points to Town.

The Millers are in FA Vase first qualifying round action on Saturday when they host minnows Wolverhampton Casuals at Church Lane.
