WOODLEY Sports boss Ally Pickering turned to some of the club’s youngsters on Saturday, and they delivered.
The Steelmen won 1-0 at Rossendale United thanks to Paul Collins’ first-half goal, and the welcome three points lifted the team up to 12th place in the UniBond first division north table.
Pickering said: "I’d been very disappointed after Rossendale knocked us out of the FA Cup the weekend before, so we got back to basics and I gave some of our youngsters a chance.
"I’ve got to say that they really came up trumps for us, I was delighted with some of the performances.
"It was a well-deserved win, and it was pleasing to come away with a clean sheet."
After a patchy recent run of results, Pickering has decided to release three players - Nat Kerr, Luke Horrocks and Cane Hanley.
Coming into the club is former Droylsden midfielder Gareth Morris, and he had an impressive debut at Rossendale.
Woodley are next in action tomorrow night [Thurs] when they host Blue Square Premier outfit Northwich Victoria in the Cheshire Senior Cup first round.
The Steelmen are without a game on Saturday.
Millers’ Vase win
NEW Mills set up a tasty FA Vase derby clash at home to neighbours Glossop North End thanks to Saturday’s 3-2 Church Lane win against Ellistown.
The Millers had to come from 2-0 down in their second qualifying round clash, however.
Hitting back for the hosts were Rhodri Giggs, Josh Howard and Adam Mather.
The Millers are back in league action on Saturday when they entertain Nelson [kick-off 3pm].
