Hancock's not happy

NEW Mills boss Tony Hancock could scarcely conceal his anger on Saturday as his team fluffed their lines in the big High Peak FA Vase derby against Glossop North End at Church Lane.

A crowd of almost 500 turned up to see the two North West Counties Premier Division rivals go head-to-head on a blustery afternoon, but it was Glossop who went on to celebrate into the night as they triumphed 4-1.

Hancock said: "We deserved to get beaten 4-1. Good luck to Glossop in the second round, they were the better side.

"Only five of my players can look themselves in the mirror after that, the rest were a disgrace.

"No passion, no commitment, no endeavour. With the side we’ve got we should be looking at getting to Wembley, never mind going out at this stage."

After years of struggle, Glossop are finally challenging near the top of the league table this season under Dave Young, and they went in front through Darren Hamilton on 22 minutes.

Josh Howard levelled matters on the half-hour mark for New Mills, but the visitors dominated in the second half.

They cruised to victory - and a £1,000 prize fund - thanks to further goals from Tom Bailey [70 minutes], skipper Nick Allen [85] and substitute Sam Hind [89].

On Monday night, the Millers missed out on a chance to bounce back from Saturday’s heavy reverse as their scheduled home league game against Alsager Town was postponed as Town faced an FA Vase replay.

New Mills travel to Atherton Collieries in the league on Saturday.

WOODLEY Sports slid disappointingly out of the FA Trophy at the preliminary round stage on Saturday as they lost 1-0 at home to Quorn. The Steelmen hosted Trafford in the league last night [Tues], then on Saturday they host Garforth Town.
