Tipped for the top

WOODLEY Sports were sent spinning to an unfortunate 4-3 defeat at high-flying Ossett Albion on Saturday.

Sam Walker scored twice and Adam Morning fired in a 35-yard scorcher, but it wasn’t enough for the Steelmen.

Manager Ally Pickering said: "Ossett are a very good, well-organised side. You can see why they’ve been hotly tipped to go up this season."

Meanwhile, Pickering’s showdown talks with Woodley chiefs last week appear to have been productive, despite all the playing squad having to agree to a sizeable cut in wages.

"I was expecting one or two lads to maybe opt to leave when they were informed about the drop in money," said Pickering.

"But it’s been encouraging and very positive for me to hear that every one of the lads is happy to stay with us."

Woodley’s reserves won 3-0 against Ossett Albion.

On target were Mark Haslam, Jordan McNally and Pete Wild.

The Youth team represented the Stockport and District League side, and beat their Mid-Cheshire counterparts 2-0.

NEW Mills are firmly back on track thanks to back-to-back victories.

Last Tuesday [14th], the Millers defied atrocious weather conditions as they won 2-1 at Abbey Hey.

On the mark were Gary Kharas and Melford Knight.

On Saturday New Mills cruised to a 2-0 home win against Silsden.

New signings Matt Smith and Steve Moores both scored on their debuts.

Meanwhile, Millers boss Tony Hancock has released three players - Rhodri Giggs, Chris Royle and ex-Stockport County favourite Mike Flynn.

This Saturday New Mills travel to Ashton Athletic.

CHEADLE Town earned a very creditable point as they drew 1-1 at second-placed Wigan Robin Park on Saturday.

Rob Brocklehurst hit an equaliser for Cheadle following a corner-kick just before half-time.

The result keeps Cheadle hot on the heels of the leaders in third place, just two points behind Wigan, but with four games in hand.

This Saturday Cheadle are at home to Padiham [3pm ko].
