Gannon salutes a big win

26/ 9/2007

IT was a happy Jim Gannon that emerged to speak to the press after Saturday’s well-deserved win against rock-bottom Wrexham.

The visitors provided a stern test for the Hatters on Saturday - and in doing so looked far from a bottom-of-the-table outfit - but Gannon saluted his team who shot themselves up a clutch of places in the table thanks to the three points.

After watching over his side’s first League Two win since the opening day of the season, Gannon said: "A win is a win. Before today there had been a bit of doom and gloom around the place.

"We needed things to click for us, and thankfully it did today.

"It was a great ball in for the second goal, and a great finish. We did get good balls into good areas today.

"The league table looks a lot healthier for us now.

"This was a big, big win for us.

"The secret of our success last season was our strong home form, so it has been a bit disappointing to have only won one so far his season.

"But the three points will put us in a lot stronger position now, it’s up to us to go out and get another win like this next weekend at Brentford."

Gannon went on to salute first half goal hero Elding, who smashed home his third goal of the season from well outside the Wrexham box just three minutes after struggling Wrexham had taken the lead against the run of play through Marc Williams.

Gannon added: "We’d like Anthony to really step up a gear for us now. We’ve been telling him to keep faith in himself during recent weeks.

"We’ll certainly keep faith with him and hopefully he’ll now go on and score a few more goals in the coming weeks."

Wrexham continue to struggle at the foot of the table.

Their boss Brian Carey said: "It’s another defeat for us, but it’s not about analysing performances, we’ve lost the game and that’s that.

"It is all about results of course, and we have got to turn things round quickly.

"Their first goal was a bad one to give away.

"You can’t give teams like Stockport goals like that, it’s got to be better."
