COUNTY’S crop of exciting young players are not just excelling on the pitch.
Last week, seven members of the Hatters’ Puma Youth Alliance Cup-winning squad were presented with Certificates of Congratulation by County chairman Norman Beverley, for successfully completing the Apprenticeship in Sporting Excellence programme.
The programme, which came into existence in June 2004, is managed by League Football Education, a partnership organisation created between the Football League and the PFA.
Stockport County, along with Central Sports, are responsible for delivering the major content within the football and academic streams of the programme.
The two-year course, taken between the ages of 16 and 18, sees apprentices study for an NVQ in Achieving Excellence in Sports Performance, an academic education qualification and a certificate in coaching football.
These qualifications equip both the apprentices who go on to become professional footballers and those that leave the game, with skills and academic qualifications that are viewed as essential by employers. The seven players, pictured with Beverley and youth team boss Craig Madden, are Chris Coward, Dan Ellis, Gianluca Havern, Tommy Rowe, Greg Tansey, James Tunnicliffe and Paul Turnbull. They were County’s first group to undertake the programme.
An eighth player, Ryan Crowther, is now at Liverpool.
