Wales call on Ash for first time

19/ 3/2008

COUNTY’S new international defender described his call-up to the Welsh international squad as the biggest moment of his football career.

Ashley Williams will travel to Luxembourg with Wales on Tuesday prior to Wednesday’s friendly clash.

Williams learned of his inclusion in John Toshack’s squad from his girlfriend, shortly before being bombarded with text messages from wellwishers.

"My girlfriend texted me at five past 12 on the day of the announcement to tell me," said the County skipper. "And everyone I know texted me after that!"

Williams’ new international status will not cause any ‘club v country’ arguments, as Hatters boss Jim Gannon has given his full support to the man he made club captain in the summer.

"I’m delighted for Ashley," the gaffer told the Express.

"His call-up is well warranted and well deserved.

"I’ve been told we can play him on Monday but it would be unfair to the player if he wants to go to the training camp.

"We have to consider his position - I’ll be speaking to John and Dean [Saunders, Toshack’s assistant] and see what their plans are.

"If there is any chance that he’ll be playing then I’d like for him to go to the Wales camp and be fully fresh so he can get the most out of that experience."

Even if Williams doesn’t get to play this time around, Williams says the experience will benefit him, and therefore County, in the long run.

"Just being around those players, some of them Premiership players, is a good thing for me," he said.

"I’ll probably be a little bit nervous just before the match, but once you are on the pitch it is the same as any other game.

"Things are good for me on all fronts at the moment.

"The team is doing well and we have to keep that going for as long as possible and finish the season strongly.

"Last year it was probably new to us but, even though we are a young team, we know what needs to be done."

When you consider that just befor Jim Gannon arrived as manager, the club was prepared to release Ash on loan to any club who wanted him. If that had been allowed to happen, he could well be playing non-league now, and both county and Wales would be without a fantastic defender and leader on the pitch. Well done to Ash. his reward is well deserved, and well done to Jim for spotting the potential in a wonderful young player.
