Records alone 'mean nothing'

19/ 3/2008

COUNTY boss Jim Gannon wants his team’s league record-breaking antics to be translated into success this season.

Despite earning nine consecutive wins without conceding, something that no other team has achieved in Football League history, the Hatters failed to clinch a play-off place last term.

Gannon expects his side to go that step further this time.

He explained: "Last year we had a different experience, a difficult experience at the end of the season, and all the records meant nothing as we had achieved nothing.

"This year hopefully the records will mean something because we achieve something.

"We’ll work hard and take each game as it comes. It’s in our own hands because we’ve still got to play all the top sides and they’ve all got to play each other.

"We’ve just got to keep marching on towards those top three, but credit to the lads, they’ve been fantastic over the last 19 games. They’re performing, and I’m just supporting at the moment. They’ve been fantastic again today and they deserve all the plaudits."

County achieved success on the road again on Saturday, beating Lincoln, who had won eight of their last ten games, 1-0 and equalling the League record of eight consecutive away wins.

The only goal of the match was scored by substitute David Poole.

The Hatters’ manager also heaped praise on his man-of-the-match, Dominic Blizzard, for his ‘outstanding’ performance during the ‘tough’ game.

He said: "There was a lot of frenetic play in the first half but he seemed to be the one player who seemed to be able to cushion and push the ball around.

"I thought he was awesome in terms of his athleticism, his work rate, the way he covered and screened and then just kept the ball moving.

"He wants to do more for the team in terms of attacking, but for me he’s very much that top drawer defensive midfielder who wins it, gives it, and moves the team around the pitch and, again, it was an outstanding performance from him."
