Jim's 'great result'
Simon Smedley16/ 4/2008
THERE was plenty of pride gushing from Hatters boss Jim Gannon on Saturday night after his young side gate-crashed Peterborough’s promotion party in such dramatic fashion.
A near full house packed into London Road well before kick-off as Posh fans appeared to be expecting the victory that would secure their side promotion to League One.
But write this current County side off at your peril was the message after the match as the champagne was kept firmly on ice thanks to teenager Tommy Rowe’s second-half winner.
It was a great day for everyone at County, and of course it kept the Hatters still firmly in the hunt for automatic promotion themselves.
A delighted Gannon said: "This was a great result, in fact I’m running out of superlatives to describe the lads. They were magnificent.
"I feel very humbled by the work ethic, the energy and the professional application they all put in.
"They’ve put in a huge week’s work and I can’t give them enough credit for that.
"We’ve talked about turning points through the season. There’s been several things that have gone on, but they’ve all culminated with this result.
"I could write a book about 101 things, but we’ve seen the emergence of some fantastic talent at this club.
"We’ve developed different systems, and the players have applied themselves brilliantly.
"The main thing though, is that we’ve got skill, hard work and a real professional approach to every game.
"In the last 23 games we’ve picked up 55 points. Over the course of a season that would be 110. That shows the form we’ve been in.
"To come to a team on the brink of promotion and get another three points shows how much of an incredible effort this has been.
"With the young profile we’ve got, the team is still learning and still growing.
"The lads are getting better and better and I’m so proud of them.
"I’m looking forward to the next four games, the next seven games, in fact the future of this club because it’s looking bright with this group of players."
Gannon added: "I don’t like singling individual players out, I think there’s been a great team ethic in terms of the way players have worked their socks off from front to back.
"Tommy and Liam Dickinson always look a threat going forward, Dom Blizzard was magnificent again and Gary Dicker and Jason Taylor worked really hard. Everyone put in a shift."
Should less emphasis be placed on the results of tests and more emphasis on general education for children?
