Mac salutes 'unbelievable' goal

HATTERS defender Jim McNulty was delighted for his team-mate Stephen Gleeson on Sunday night after the young Irishman’s special volley late in the game at Adams Park.

McNulty, who played most of the game at Wycombe after replacing the unfortunate Michael Raynes in just the 14th minute, said of the equalising strike: "It was an unbelievable goal. I was right behind Stephen’s shot and I couldn’t believe it when it went in. I was relieved as well because I thought we’d played really well, but I’m made up for Stephen.

"He’s done that a few times in training, but what a stage to do it on."

McNulty clearly fancies his side’s chances of making it to the Wembley play-off final now.

The former Macclesfield Town man said: "Wycombe are a strong side and are difficult to break down, but I think we controlled the ball well on Sunday and controlled the play.

"It was a very positive performance, and if anyone was going to win at the end it was us.

"With our fans behind us next weekend now, I think it’s definitely advantage to us.

"The fans can really make their mark on Saturday and see us through to the final."

Whether McNulty gets the call to start Saturday’s second leg remains to be seen, but he expressed some sympathy for hamstring injury victim Raynes.

"I’m gutted for Raynesy," added McNulty. "We’ll have to see how he recovers this week."
