Wembley dreams turn into reality

28/ 5/2008

COUNTY’S Wembley goal-scoring heroes Anthony Pilkington and Liam Dickinson both spoke to the Express at the same time after Monday’s dramatic promotion clincher.

Pilkington and Dickinson - who bagged his 21st goal of the season with a cracking 67th minute strike - were in demand by the media scrum after Monday’s victory, but of course the pair made sure they found time to speak to us by the side of the pitch just after the jaw-dropping stadium had emptied.

Of his dream goal, an overjoyed Dickinson said: "It was a great touch across from Pilks to me to be honest, I didn’t quite see exactly where [Rochdale defender] Nathan Stanton was, so I just hit it first time.

"It was great to see the shot beat the keeper at the near post.

"It’s been a dream come true, it really has.

"Not just to play at Wembley, but to score here as well - words just can’t explain it.

"I’m confident we can make an impact in League One next season.

"This season we’ve played the likes of Carlisle and Tranmere and beat both of them after putting in good performances.

"There’s definitely more to come from us in League One."

Pilkington who, like Dickinson, has been quite superb since being plucked from non-league football, added: "Nobody in the team let us down today.

"Every player on our side was the man-of-the-match.

"It’s been a great feeling to have scored at Wembley, one which I’m struggling to describe really.

"We’ve got some tasty games to come next season now, and I just can’t wait to be playing at places like Leeds and Leicester.

"There are some big attendances waiting for us, but we’ve all got a taste for it now and every single one of us is really looking forward to it."

Dickinson and Pilkington will shortly be heading off to celebrate promotion in style as a Magaluf trip awaits for County winger David Poole’s stag night.
