Dicko is definitely not for sale

18/ 6/2008

PETER Ward has firmly stated that County striker Liam Dickinson is not for sale after a further week of intense speculation.

A host of clubs, including some from the Championship, continue to be linked with moves for Dickinson, but Hatters’ assistant boss Ward insists that Edgeley Park is still the best place for the ex-Woodley front-man to further develop his career.

Ward said: "There has been a lot of interest and speculation once again, so when Liam returns from holiday Jim and myself will sit down and have a chat to him about it.

"People must remember that Liam still has two years left to run on his contract, so as far we’re concerned he is definitely not for sale.

"Derby County did put a bid in for him, but to be honest it was a derisory figure.

"It was considering it was for a great young player who did so well for us last season.

"We’re trying to build a team up at Stockport, a team for the future.

"We’re not in the business of breaking it up at this stage.

"Liam has still got a long way to go in his career, he’s still only 22, and everyone at County feels the best place for him to develop further is with us here."

It remains to be seen whether or not Derby or any other team approach County chiefs with any more bids for Dickinson, who scored 21 goals last season.

Completely understand your frustration guys but unless Jim Gannon gets poached then I believe players will come and go but the club will continue to progress. If JG went anywhere then I think we would have a problem without him to find and improve players. I've always thought that Danny Bergara's sacrifice on the altar of a certain chairman's ego was the start of our last decline. DB could take players nobody wanted and get more out of them than they themselves probably thought they had in them. As that team aged, the replacement process faltered and remaining good players soon became cashed in assets. Result = one burst bubble, relegation followed relegation and almost non league status. The difference from then and now is that the manager has not been fired on some trumped up charge, he's still there. The team isn't a team that has peaked either and whose best players have to be sold while there's still time to get some money for them. We're not heading down, we're going the opposite way. Players will inevitably be sold but other players will come in. As long as we have the management team who can do that, with the backing of the club (us),then we will be OK. It's the way it must be, we do not have the resources to buy success and we certainly must NOT try and buy success with money we haven't got. We nearly lost our club already playing that mug's game. Come on County, onward and upward!

I endorse your comments entirely bluephil. It seems no time since the euphoria of Wembley and what now was the naive belief that we would move forward, strengthen the team and consolidate a League 1 position. Hopeless - is Ward in any sort of position of authority? I suggest not, so he should keep his pointless opinions to himself. We should have read the script - the cream of the team (Elding, Williams and now Dicko - who was developed, by County, from a raw non-league player to a target for a Championship side- for peanuts). This is of course the path we have taken since heady days in the Championship with the progressive sell-off of the best talent - for what? The euphorisa starts to evaporate again! Gannon next?
