County target 'Pistol Pete'

COUNTY are hot in pursuit of Northern Ireland striker Peter Thompson, and a deal could be at least verbally agreed for the 24-year-old today [Wed].
Twenty-four-year-old Thompson, who is known by fans of his current club Linfield as ‘Pistol Pete’, has seven full Northern Ireland caps, and scored 44 times last season as Linfield secured a third successive league and cup double.
Hatters boss Jim Gannon and club managing director Mark Maguire met with Thompson in Belfast this week, en route to County’s training camp in Lake Garda, Italy.
It was reported yesterday that the Hatters tabled a bid of £100,000, plus add-ons, for hot prospect Thompson, although the Express were unable to contact anyone from the County party in Italy to confirm this.
Norwich City, Kilmarnock, Hibernian and Motherwell are also rumoured to be interested in Thompson, but yesterday, ahead of Linfield’s Champions League qualifier against Dinamo Zagreb, Linfield’s manager David Jeffrey already appeared resigned to losing his prized asset to County.
Jeffrey said: "It will leave us with a massive hole to try to fill, but he [Thompson] goes with our blessing and the club wants to facilitate a smooth passage for him.
"We are still talking to Stockport, but things have moved on quickly and I am not sure he will get the chance to play one last game for us on Wednesday. Stockport have made a verbal offer which is to be followed up in writing and it will then be considered by us on Wednesday."
