Great opportunity for Thompson

23/ 7/2008

HATTERS boss Jim Gannon insisted after Peter Thompson’s capture from Linfield that the move would be ‘great for everybody’.

Gannon, speaking to County TV immediately after ‘Pistol Pete’ had made the switch from Northern Ireland for a substantial six-figure fee, said: "We will get value for money from Peter.

"He’s signed a three-year deal, and while, like any player, it’ll take Pete a while to adapt and adjust, the way things are going I think we’ll soon see some of the form that’s attracted so much attention in Northern Ireland.

"We’ve tracked Pete for quite a while, but we’ve now given him a great opportunity to make the grade here.

"It’s an opportunity to make the step up from Northern Ireland football and make an impact in the Football League. It’s going to be a great move for everybody.

"We’ll see how things go now, we’ll see what type of player he is and we’ll find a system that suits him best.

"He’s going to be a great addition to the team and I’m looking forward to working with him."

Gannon was asked whether or not he felt Thompson would be able to comfortably settle into life in English football, and the County boss compared the situation to that of Irish midfielder Gary Dicker, who linked up at Edgeley Park last summer and went on to have a superb 2007/08 season.

Gannon added: "It did take Gary a while to adjust, but I’m quietly confident that Pete will also make good progress here.

"He’s got a fantastic goalscoring record, and I think he’s hungry and ready to make a succesful life over here. He’ll play and score regularly here, and I hope he can further his international career while he’s here too."
