JIM Gannon is pleased with the progress his squad are making as pre-season preparations continue to gather momentum.

With the 2008/09 League One opener away at Huddersfield Town now just 18 days away, the County boss is satisfied so far with his new signings and the efforts of the all the rest of his players.

Gannon said: "This summer we have been a little bit slower in building up the fitness work, but we are starting to stretch the lads now.

"Matches are coming now too, and there have been plenty of glimpses of positivity. We do need to sharpen up a bit at both ends, but that will come with matches.

"As each week goes by now, we are becoming a stronger and stronger unit.

"We’re definitely moving in the right direction.

"Everything is building up nicely, so now we’ll continue with more additions, more training, and stronger matches."

County beat Cammell Laird 3-2 in their first meaningful pre-season friendly fixture on Saturday, and last night [Tues] a full-strength squad headed off to take on Rochdale at Spotland.

County host a Liverpool XI at Edgeley Park on Saturday [3pm ko].
