A respectable draw

20/ 8/2008

JIM Gannon appeared satisfied enough to have gained a point from Saturday’s game against an impressive, big-spending Leicester outfit who will surely be there or thereabouts in the promotion shake-up come May.

The Hatters battled bravely to bag a goalless draw in front of almost seven-and-a-half thousand at Edgeley Park, and two draws from the opening two games in League One surely must be deemed a thoroughly decent return.

County boss Gannon said: "That was a very respectable result for my team today. Leicester were excellent. You could see the quality they have in their team, but my lads stuck to their task and we battled it out to secure a very valuable point. Credit to them, they created chances and Matty Fryatt and Steve Howard up front really caused us problems. We do need to show a bit more quality ourselves to move the ball forward at times, we didn’t cut through as often as we should have, but I changed the style and the shape a bit after half-time and we produced a bit more punch up front. It’s difficult to pick out individual players, but Owain fon Williams, Dominic Blizzard and Michael Raynes did well. Not a lot of other players produced big enough performances though.  It is amazing when you think that just one of their players is on more than the whole of my budget put together, but I’ll keep trying to get the best out of my lads."

Unsurprisingly Leicester are already one of the front-runners in the League One table having won one and drawn one so far and not conceded a goal, and their boss Nigel Pearson wasn’t too concerned despite his side missing a number of decent chances.

Pearson said: "We got better in the second half and I can’t fault my players’ application and performance. I’m pleased with how they went about things. Both sides went for it and Stockport like to play football. There isn’t going to be any easy games in this division, but we’ve got a decent squad and decent quality. We’ve just got to strive to hit the level of performance required week in, week out.  Everybody played their part today, we did try and win the game but it didn’t quite happen for us.  I’m not going to get uptight about the situation, I’ve got every confidence in my players.  There’s no negatives about drawing here, in fact there were lots of positives.  We’ve just got to take this result on the chin and move on to next week’s game."
