Thompson’s off the mark

THERE was a sense of relief in the air on Saturday night when the Express spoke to Peter Thompson about his first goal for County.

However Thompson, who finally notched his first for the Hatters in his eighth appearance since his big-money summer move from Linfield, always had the belief that he would get onto the scoresheet sooner rather than later.

He said after netting in the 55th minute at Cheltenham: "I suppose I do feel a bit relieved after that.  I’ve had a few chances and hit the post against Leicester which was unlucky, but all season I’ve kept my head down, kept believing in myself, and I knew I’d put one away. I had a chance before I scored on Saturday, but I put my shot too close to the goalkeeper. However, when Pilks put in a great cross from the right, I knew I just had to get in front of the defender and put a head on the ball to get an effort on target. Luckily I did get a decent contact, and so it’s a start for me. As a striker you need to start somewhere, and although I would have liked that first goal to have come about a month ago, I’ve got one now so I need to keep working hard, kept trying to improve, and score more goals. I know I’m capable of doing that."

There were mixed emotions in the County dressing room after Saturday’s game, which saw Michael Raynes forced to earn the Hatters a richly-deserved point with his last-minute equaliser.

Thompson added: "The lads were a bit disappointed, but after being behind so late in the game you do have to be pleased to have got something out of it at the end. Raynesy’s come up trumps for us with a great header, you can always rely on him to be a winner in those situations. We’re all looking forward to Friday’s derby game against Oldham now. We’ve had a few draws on the spin so it’s important that we quickly get back to that winning mentality. It’ll be difficult against Oldham, but we’ll be more than ready for it."

Meanwhile, Thompson is now also delighted after he received another Northern Ireland call-up for the forthcoming World Cup qualifiers against Slovenia and San Marino which are to be played on October 11 and 15 respectively.

‘Pistol Pete’ added: "Any time you get called up by your country is a proud moment. I never take anything for granted and I’ll keep working really hard, but playing in League One does seem to have given me a better opportunity this season."
