Tommy takes praise

HATTERS boss Jim Gannon was clearly delighted to have secured victory at Hereford United thanks to Tommy Rowe’s stoppage-time strike.

After the dramatic late win at Edgar Street, County’s second on their travels within a matter of days, Gannon said: "I predicted it was going to be a tight game and that there would probably only be one goal in it.

"There were a lot of opportunities for both sides, but it was a great time for us to win the game.

"It just goes to show the quality and the Premier League fitness Tommy has for him to be able to play to the very last minute of a game, and then to produce a finish like that.

"I was disappointed at going in goalless at the break, then I was worried about the second half and the fairly strong wind that was blowing.

"But we dominated possession in many ways and mixed up the way we played.

"We looked a threat from setplays, but Hereford are well-versed in their game-plan and they stuck to their task.

"They gave themselves a fighting chance to win the game in the second half."

Another solid defensive display brought another clean sheet with Gannon highlighting the displays of James Tunnicliffe and the returning Johnny Mullins.

He added: "Johnny and James were awesome, but I do have to give a lot of credit to Johnny.

"He’s been very professional waiting for his opportunity, and I thought he was the man of the match today.

"He was incredible, in terms of the way he leaps from dead positions and how many contacts he got on first balls in from setplays. He was outstanding."

In contrast, Hereford midfielder Kris Taylor was left to rue a ‘killer blow’ after Graham Turner’s side suffered another league defeat.

He said: "We dealt with their long throw-ins and their set-pieces all afternoon, then the killer blow in stoppage time.

"I don’t think there was much in the game."
