Gannon's highlight

DELIGHTED Hatters boss Jim Gannon admitted that Saturday’s victory was probably the high point of his season so far.
County beat spluttering Carlisle 3-0 in front of well over 6,000 at Edgeley Park thanks to a brace from Carl Baker and a thunderbolt from outside the box from the hugely impressive Stephen Gleeson.
Gannon said: "It was a fantastic performance from us today. A lot of players showed exactly what they’re about.
"I always knew we would grow as the season went on, but looking back this was probably the highlight of our season so far, perhaps it was even better than when we beat Oldham here.
"The lads turned in such a competitive performance, and we’re in such a healthy situation.
"Everybody is proud of the team, and is enjoying the way we’re playing our football."
Gannon also saluted Baker - who scored his first County goals since his big-money switch from Morecambe in the summer - and new boy Craig Davies, who led the line well following his loan move from Oldham Athletic on Friday.
The County boss added: "Carl is the kind of player I think we’re missing in this country.
"He’s electric, skilful and takes people on, you could see exactly why we wanted him here.
"He was due a goal, but he grabbed two great goals today. Carl really is a joy to watch.
"Craig did really well too. He gave us a different dimension that lengthened the game. That allowed us to create more chances.
"Our fans seemed to take to him as well. I’m delighted to have him on board."
Gannon did have some sympathy for his opposite number John Ward, who eventually paid the price for his team not winning in 12 games when he was relieved of his position on Monday.
Many of Carlisle’s fans were calling for Ward’s head in the second half on Saturday, and they have now got their wish.
Gannon said: "John’s a great manager and he’s got some good players, they’re just on an unfortunate run at present.
"It is difficult when you lose as many players as he has [injuries and suspensions have decimated Ward’s squad of late]."
A statement on Carlisle’s website on Monday stated: "Carlisle United have parted company with manager John Ward by mutual consent.
"The club thank John for his service over the last 13 months, but after suffering 10 defeats and a draw in our last 11 games - a run which has seen us slide from second to 20th in the League One table - we agreed the time had come for us to go our separate ways."
