THE draw for the 2008 MENWN Trophy has now been distributed to a record number of entrants in clubs across the areas covered by the MEN Weekly Newspaper Group.

Stamford’s Alan Hood will be defending the men’s singles title he won in dramatic style at Marple in 2007, and ladies pairs’ champions Julie Connolly and Sue Mangov-Jones from Oldham will be looking to defend their ladies pairs knockout title.

The competitors in both sections look to win the top prizes of a golf holiday for two in South West Ireland provided by Peter Walsh of Fairway Holidays, a member of Bramhall Golf Club, and for the runners-up there will be a round for four people at the magnificent Mere Golf and Country Club.

The third-placed players will receive vouchers from Gareth Woolnough for Made2Measure golf equipment.

The competition will be concluded at Marple Golf Club on Sunday, September 14, when the last 20 men and the remaining eight ladies pairs play-off for their respective championships.

Event organiser Alan Simmons is delighted with the response to the ever-popular competitions in 2008.

He said: "The number of entrants grows year on year, and this year we have been pleased to be able to welcome golfers from the Trafford clubs to enter with the introduction of the Trafford Metro News to their area.

"The format of Stableford knockout has proved to be very popular, enabling players to enjoy the full 18 holes in each match, and many new golfing friendships have been forged over the years.

"With such a large number of golfers in the field it would be difficult to predict who will hold up the winner’s trophies, provided by Suzanne Ryan of Ryan PGT.

"There will also be a number of other excellent prizes given out on final day, with Marple Golf Club once again set to be fine hosts on a day to remember for all who reach this stage."

All entrants to this year’s competition will also receive vouchers for the excellent driving range at Styal Golf Club.

EUROPEAN Tour star Phil Archer was delighted to be able to make a rare appearance in a Manchester Alliance event and meet up with many of his old friends at the testing course of Wychwood Park.

And Archer showed his class by posting the top individual pro score of 41 points.

But Archer and his amateur partner Anton Johnson from Warrington had to give best in the pro-am competition to home pair Frank Kiddie and Trevor Brennand with a fine haul of 45 points.

There was a logjam of three pairs on 42 points with Brookdale duo Tony Cuppello and Peter Buckley getting the nod after a card play-off from Leigh’s Andrew Baguley and Steve Dagger and David Smith and Lee Parr (Swinton Park).

In the am-am section, Turton duo Gordon Everest and Alan Bullock led in with 44 points, ahead of Ashton-on-Mersey’s young guns Oliver Smith and Ollie Panteji (43) and Wychwood’s David Marchant and Barry White (41).
