Give golf a try!

11/ 6/2008

MARPLE Golf Club professional David Myers has gone back to school to give more than 350 children the chance to sample golf.

He has been working in 18 schools along with support from the Golf Foundation, who have been providing funding and coaching for juniors for over 50 years.

The students were able to use Tri-Golf equipment, which offers a quick and easy way to understand the skills required to play the game.

All those who took part were able to compete for a place in their school team, with the winning team being offered a coaching course at Marple who had generously offered the use of their club’s facilities. The winners on a special day of events were Mellor Primary School, who can now look forward to some coaching with Myers at Marple [see picture, right].

Hazel Grove had a full house for their Open Mixed Am-Am, and enjoying the course and the day were the Ashton-u-Lyne quartet of Michael and Lyn Wood and Andy and Michelle Baines with a winning score of 79 points.

Next in with 76 were Lymm’s Dave Golden, Korin Meldrum, Dave and Carol Spruce, with Alan Eyre and Clare Ball (Bramhall), Gill and Mark Mellor (Davenport, 75) and homesters Jean Crowhurst, Rick Gajewski, Mark Thompson and Louise Hayden (74).

Grove’s men played for the Anniversary Cup and it produced a string of good scores led in by Andy Boardman (61), from junior Fraser McLeod (64) and Mark Cookson (67).

Bramall Park ladies played an LGU medal, which was also a Bunty Booth qualifier, and the top score of 71 was posted in division three by Patricia Hammond, from Linda Brisbane (75).

Park’s ladies’ Invitation Day had Heather Dodd partnering Sue Williams (Styal) to victory with 43 points, from Liz Thompson and Sylvia Dennis (Hazel Grove, 41).

The other divisional winners were Char Lang (75) and Brenda Foster (74).

Park’s men played for the Secretary’s Kettle and it went to Mark Emms (66) from NR Bamford (67) and Cliff Dews (68).

Bramhall’s girl juniors were in medal mode and Bronte Law swept to victory with her 76-4=72 return from Zoe and Jade Evans.

P Panini took the Crowther Trophy at Heaton Moor with a fine return of +5 seeing him home from Ernie Molloy and DJ Eaton (both +4).

The Spring Meeting at Moor was won by the dynamic duo of S Wilson and D Howes with 43, from R Moores and P Roberts (41) and SR and NE Jones (39).

SIMON Marsh, the much-respected PGA Professional at Heaton Moor, is looking for an enthusiastic golfer to be his assistant professional. Marsh said: "There will be plenty of time for the candidates to improve their golf and this is a good opportunity for someone who is looking to make golf their living. Punctuality is essential and a knowledge of golf club etiquette would help." Interested parties should telephone Marsh on 0161 432 0846, extension 2.
