The final countdown
10/ 9/2008
THERE may be new names on the MENWN Golf Trophy roll of honour after this weekend’s grand finals at Marple Golf Club.
Last year’s winners have fallen by the wayside, although once more they all enjoyed taking part in a competition that grows in popularity with local golfers year on year.
It is the ninth playing of the competition final and once more there has been a new record entry with nearly 100 ladies enjoying the match-play rounds looking to make the last eight pairs onto the first tee at Marple, who proudly host the final for the third year.
The men’s singles competition has proved equally popular and they are down to the last 20 players who will be looking to win the top prizes.
Among them are previous winners Terry Gills (Styal) and Steven Reyer (Tytherington).
Oldham will have a strong hand in the ladies pairs final with three pairs through. Former winners Ann Garner and Janet Holmes (Withington) are also in the frame again.
There were players from over 90 clubs involved in the competition, which included entries from Trafford clubs for the first time.
Competition organiser Alan Simmons said: "Once more entries increased for both men’s singles and ladies’ pairs and it was pleasing to get reports on close and enjoyable games played in a great spirit with new friendships being formed through golf.
"For the men’s singles and ladies pairs there is the great prize of a superb golfing trip to South West Ireland courtesy of the competition’s main sponsor Peter Walsh of Fairway Holidays."
The runners-up will win a round for four at Mere Golf and Country Club and the third prize-winners will receive vouchers from Made2Measure Golf equipment.
In addition there will be other prizes on offer on what is set to be another great day.
Thanks for great help and sponsorship go to Marple Golf Club, Styal Golf Club, Mere Golf and Country Club, Made2Measure Golf, Trolley Dolly and Ryan PGT for supplying the winners’ trophies and WGTB Golf for the organisation of the competition.
Last year Marple Golf Club hosted the MENWN Trophy final for the second time and it proved to be a big hit with players and the club concluding with a buffet and prize presentation.
Marple are offering a special arrangement for players of over 60 years of age who will not have to pay an entry fee if they join during September, October and November.
The full list of finalists sees a great range of clubs represented from across the MENWN circulation area.
