Hopley leads the way

HAZEL Grove professional and Manchester Alliance captain James Hopley led from the front as a full field of professionals and amateurs enjoyed the Sandiway course.

Hopley and his Grove amateur partner Clive Beveridge posted an impressive 45 points to finish two clear of Stamford duo Mark Smith and Ian Trow.

There was a three-way tie on 42 points with Mike Hollingworth (Denton) and Ian Gibson (Romiley) getting the nod from Tom Bolton (Hazel Grove) and Syd Hodkinson (Marple), and John Farmer (Wychwood Park) and Ron Kinsey (Alsager).

The top individual pro on the day was Dukinfield’s David Green with 38 points.

Tameside continued to make their mark in the prizes as Fairfield duo Jim Cooper and Alex Dawber topped the am-am section with 45 points ahead of Swinton Park’s Ged Tatum and Paul Barlow (43) and Stamford’s Keith Coxon and Guy Hall (42).

Marple’s men played a Sunday qualifier and Dan Hodson was out on his own with a neat 67, two clear of John Ashton and Stuart Walsh.

Stableford play for Disley ladies saw J Blackie on top with 38 points from D Seddon (37) S Commins and C Dawson (both 36).

The second round of the gold medal finals at Bramhall had Linda McKenzie in control with 72 from Deanne O’Brien (75) and Hilary Craven (76).

Bramall Park ladies played the ELGA Trust and Donna McIntosh won with 36 points from Amanda Worne (35) and Morag Kennedy and Rosemary Hadfield (both 33).

Midweek medal action for Bramhall’s men had Roy Banks cruising to victory with a fine nett 65 from Gary Tait (66) and Steve Hunter (68).

Romiley have enjoyed a great season in the Derbyshire and Cheshire Leagues winning both the League B division one Kinder Cup and the division two High Peak Trophy.

In League A division two Heaton Moor were the top guns and League A division one winners were Shrigley Hall.

Winter golf is now in full flow and will continue at all clubs until next March.
