Stockport hit on winning formula

27/ 9/2007

STOCKPORT retain the top spot in North Two West following a 20-14 victory at Lymm.

The match opened with 24 minutes of scrappy rugby, dominated by kicking, until Lymm took the lead through a penalty.

Conceding three points nudged Stockport into action and, from a catch and drive, Matt Langtree scored his first first-team try. Richard Hopkinson converted.

Before half time Lymm winger Mark Barnes-Smith narrowed the gap to one point through a penalty.

Another successful penalty after the break edged Lymm into the lead but the game changed in Stockport’s favour when Steve Pearson replaced Chris Nel at flyhalf.

The substitution gave Stockport’s backs more room to manouevre, although two attacking spells concluded with penalties to the visitors.

Hopkinson posted both, and Lymm’s No.8 got a spell in the sin-bin.

Leading 13-9, Stockport furthered their advantage when Steve Pearson made a half break to set up Craig Cooper, who scored under the posts. Hopkinson converted.

Eight minutes remained, time for Dave Marwick to pick up a yellow card and Lymm to score an unconverted try.

This weeked Stockport take on Sandbach at Headlands Road (k.o. 3pm).
